The Ultimate 2026 Guide to Flying with a Mobility Scooter: Tips, Rules, and Best Models

Traveling should be about the destination, not the stress of the journey. For seniors and those with limited mobility, flying with a mobility scooter can seem daunting. However, with the right preparation and knowledge of the 2026 regulations, you can take to the skies with confidence.

## Understanding Your Rights: The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA)

The FDA classifies mobility scooters as essential medical equipment. Under the U.S. Air Carrier Access Act, airlines are prohibited from discriminating against passengers who require these devices. As long as your scooter meets size, weight, and battery safety requirements, it’s coming with you!

## 2026 Battery Regulations: What You Need to Know

The most critical part of flying with a scooter is the battery.

– **Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) Batteries:** These are generally considered non-spillable and can stay in the scooter.

– **Lithium-Ion Batteries:** These are more restricted. Most airlines allow one battery up to 300 Watt-hours (Wh) or two batteries up to 160 Wh each. **Important:** Lithium batteries must be removed and carried in your carry-on luggage.

## Top Tips for a Smooth Flight

1. **Call 48 Hours Ahead:** Notify your airline at least two days before departure. Provide the make, model, weight, and dimensions of your scooter.

2. **Gate Check is Your Friend:** Request to “Gate Check” your scooter. This allows you to drive it right to the airplane door. It will be waiting for you at the jet bridge when you land.

3. **Protect Your Investment:** Attach a “Handling Instruction” card to your tiller. Include your name, phone number, and a simple guide on how to put the scooter in “freewheel” mode.

## Best “Flight-Ready” Scooters for 2026
